My son is off to University hopefully this September and he wants a laptop
(dont they all !). His main reason is the lack of space in the halls rooms,
which I can appreciate having seen a few of the rooms (cupboards more like).
Anyway the one he is looking at is the Sony VAIO PCG-K115S from Comet
on-line http://www.comet.co.uk/comet

Ok. Try not to post in html. It annoys people.

Hes chosen a top-of-the-range laptop. Most universities supply plenty
computer equipment so it sounds more of a want than a necessity. Id bear in
mind that halls are very insecure and a lot of thieving goes on so the lest
stealable kit thats in a room, the better. It only takes one person to
leave a hall door open and there could be 300 students in a hall!

1. Can Laptops run on-line games like counterstrike, and Diablo 2 to the
extent that his Desktop can. His PC is a fairly high spec machine with a
good gaming graphics card and is about 18 months old.

Laptops can do pretty much anything a desktop can.

2. Could he hook up his Creative Labs 5.1 stereo speakers to a laptop, do
they generally have the ports to cope ?

yes.

3. I have heard that Sony VAIOs have very clear displays, certainly the
ones I have seen are very clear.

They all do or they wouldnt sell.

4. Is there anything bad I should know about Sony VAIO laptops ?

Theyre not as good for backup/repairs/support as IBM laptops. IBM are the
bees knees of the laptop world.

5. Can a DVD +RW write CD R/W disks as well as DVDs and what does the +
mean ?

There are three types of DVD - +, - and RAM. A drive that says DVD +/- will
cope with + and - disks. Think of + as bacon and - as egg. Theyre just
names. A DVD RW drive will write to and read from CDs

6. Are there any other questions I should have asked, but havent ???

battery life, stealability, worth of buying one that might get puked on or
beer spilt on or dropped or whatever. Believe me, even the most sane and
sensible person becomes a lunatic in university.
