The palm rest area of my Satellite 3000-100 has become worn - the paint has
worn away due to the rubbing action of my palm.

I made it worse trying to make it better and now it looks scruffy - I phoned
Hugh Symons who can supply a replacement part for Ł 45 I asked and they said
the replacement was tricky

I can build PCs etc and fault find so I am confident I go do it but I`ve
never opened a notebook up before also Im considering taking it apart to and
respraying the exisiting part.

How hard can it be ?

Why dont you use masking tape and re-spray it. The masking is worth
spending some time on, the spraying is a doddle.

I actually work for CBC Computer Systems, as long as you remove the screws
and put them in a logical order around the machine you shouldnt really have
any problems doing the work. The only special tool you may need is a
security screwdriver (there is one screw under the keyboard IIRC that looks
like a hex bolt, but it has a raised point), but if you are lucky you may
get a flatbladed precision screwdriver to fit :-) (Dont quote me on that
though).

Hope this helps
