I contacted Hewlett Packard to find out what memory I need to upgrade my lap
top from 500 mb to 1Gb and got the following reply.

Let me share with you that your Compaq Presario 2521EA Notebook has two
memory slots and the maximum supported memory is 1 GB.

To obtain 1GB of memory you need to install two 512MB, 266MHz, 200-pin,
PC2100 SO-DIMM (Small Outline Dual In-Line Memory Module).

I duly purchased the following memory

2 x Extra Value 512MB DDR SODIMM PC2100 266mhz 200pin Memory Module from
Ebuyer.

The laptop will not boot properly. I can get into safe mode and in safe mode
my computer shows 960mb RAM, but it crashes to a blue screen when trying to
boot properly , Unfortunately the blue screen doesnt last long enough to
see any error code.

Thats what you get for buying cheap shit generic RAM - no guarantee that
itll be compatible.

Get yourself off to Crucial and use their memory selector tool and buy
some decent RAM from what it suggests. They have a no quibble
compatibility guarantee and the RAM is guaranteed for a lifetime.

Let me share with you? What an unfortunate selection of words. What is
he? An undercover operative withholding HP trade secrets? Probably -
some companies go to pains to avoid giving information that would allow
customers to avoid purchasing the official upgrade product. Dont think
HP as policy does this (their service info is readily available on
hp.com) but this support person may be tripping on something strange in
the curry sauce...

Im guessing there you tried to use their on-line crucial system
scanner tool. Doesnt always work ;-(

Go here
<http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.aspx?model=Presario%202500%20Series>

Crucial are actually listing faster PC2700 (DDR333) as compatible -
which it will be. See their FAQ.

The information the HP operative quoted does check out on other memory
upgrade sites, such as Kingston - and also in HPs service manual, which
a google will find ya.

Shopping at Ebuyer for extra value goods has a hit and miss nature
about it. They must have large dustbins located fairly close to their
RMA department filling up daily. Occasionally though, you get something
which is quite brilliant for nought, but not memory :-)

Also got a Wireless network adapter from them I had no idea there would be

Got a returns authorisation for this and the memory but cant find the
