Hi all,

I am about to get a new portable and am, despite reading the plethora of
material on the subject on the Web, still not sure about screen size and
resolution.
Having looked at machines in some shops Ive decided on a 15.4
widescreen job, as a good compromise between portability and
screen/keyboard size.

So, what resolution would be best for a 15.4 portable screen?

My desktop machine has a 24 monitor (Dell Ultrasharp), running at
1920x1200. This looks very nice and suits me very well.
If I scale 24 down to 15.4 that works out at around 1280x800.
So, thats what I need, yes? That would be a good, useable res. on that
size of screen.
Such logic always seemed to make sense in the past when working out
resolutions. My old 19 CRT worked well at 1280x960, for instance.

However, I see lots of remarks from people saying that higher resoltuion
is better. But doesnt his make everything smaller on screen and harder
to see properly?

I know you can scale fonts but I already do this up to the standard
bigger option on my 24.

The only other point that occurs to me is that laptop screens are
generally used closer to the face than desktop monitors, so does that
compensate for the smaller text, icons, etc?

I would appreciste some advice on this, explaining what ever you think
is the better approach and why. (Too many forum messages jsut say the
more the better without explaining why they say it).

I am currently tending toward 1440x900, as a compromise solution, but
Im not too sure about it.

Thanks in advance, John

P.S. Oh yes, uses... well, I will use it for general office work (WP,
spreadsheets), Access db development, Web/email, Web site development,
some image editing.
The image editing would be mainly reviewing photographs I have shot
during the day when I get back to the hotel/b&b etc. I might do some
cropping and adjustments etc. but the main work in that area would be
done back at base on the big machine/24 monitor.

You answered most of your own questions.
How good are your eyes?
Be aware that not all programs/webpages are well behaved.
Once you start changing default character fonts, scaling things,
the sloppy programs/webpages start displaying text that wont fit
the container theyre in. Youll (not)find command buttons that cant
be seen or clicked, text you cant read etc.
My favorite laptop is 1400x1050 15
But you gotta have good eyes or glasses that work.

id agree with mike, definitely choose one that youre happy running without
mucking about with with windows/ie font settings

personally I prefer to get the max resolution possible. i have a sony tr5mp
which has 1280x720 on a 10.5 screen, and a dell vostro 1700 with 1920x1200
on a 17. i love being able to get so much stuff on the desktop but some
people find them too difficult to read

Best?

It depends on how/where you want to use it, and on your eyesight.

The cheap ones are mostly around 1200x800, some are 1440x900, the good ones
are mostly 1680x1050.

Yes, but it also means that there is more information displayed on-screen
at once, which is often more useful. You make your own compromises.

My choice would be a smaller screen -- 14 NON-wide -- for portability,
with as high a resolution as I felt I could comfortably see. My thinkpad
has 1400x1050; yes, everything is rather small, but I couldnt read any
screen without my reading glasses and with them the thinkpad is fine.

Scaled-up fonts on a screen with fine resolution may be easier to read than
non-scaled-up fonts on a screen with coarser resolution -- especially if
the fonts are anti-aliased (and it is done well).

Not if youre long-sighted! Otherwise, yes; of course.

Screens are very personal things, the only good way to choose is to try a
few.

Cheers,
Daniel.

I used to go for only 14 screens with 1400x1050 - it seemed a very nice
combination of portability and size. I was hesitant when switching to 12
with 1024x786 but to my delight it is NOT too small or difficult to read. So
to me the question is how important is portability to you. If you dont mind
the extra 4 pounds(my 12 dell x300 is 2.8 pounds , which is great) then
just go for the big resolution ones. If I were to buy a 15 or 17 I would
also like it to have a resolution higher than 1200x800 - if it is just
that, youre carrying too much weight for nothing.

Higher resolution allows you to see more things at the same time. The size
doesnt really matter unless your eyes are bad and beyond correction. And
yes - the fact that laptops are used closer to your face does make all the
difference.

14 with 1400x1050 is I think comfortable enough but just so. Anything
beyond 14 had better had at least 1400x1050 or equivalent for widescreen.

15.4 with 1680x1050 is about equivalent for widescreen, and generally adds
about a pound to the weight, compared with a 14 1400x1050. Anything bigger
than that had better be at least 1920x1200, but dont think of it as
portable!

Widescreen is EVIL on laptops, it kills portability.

Cheers,
Daniel.

Works for me! It sure is still better than the portable computers from
the 80s. Now dubbed as luggables. And the lighter ones weighed about
20 lbs. The first color one was a Commodore 64 version called the SX-64.
Ah... the good old days with a 5 inch color screens. ROTFL

How do you figure that? What are you assuming to be fixed?

For the same screen *height*, widescreen makes the laptop wider and
larger and heavier.

For the same *width*, you get less screen real estate but a shorter
laptop body thats more portable, and fits in restricted spaces like an
airplane seat better.
