This machine is apparently stock with the inclision of additional
memory sticks.

It was after this that the system started to run really slowly.

I inherited the system after my manager got into a team discussion of
slow boxes and mentioned the problems with this machine and said that
hed let it go for the right price. Silly me, I asked the obvious
question.

$20 later, Im trying to get the system to run.

So far, weve removed one of the memory sticks, then replaced it with
the second (using only the upper slot, WRT the SIMM pins are
down). Ive also reloaded the OS twice from the recovery disks.

However, I havent done a deep format of the drives (just read that
some Trojan Horses exist in the hard drives base information blocks
and only a FDISK-style format will work).

One of my co-workers has said that this has all the signs of a memory
conflict (eg speed, type, etc.) but that doesnt seem to be in
agreement with swapping out the memory sticks.

Any ideas on what can be done?

Sounds like a faulty hard disk.

Try running http://www.hdtune.com/ on it to check its SMART status.
