Dear all:

I am wanting to purchase a 17 monitor with max resolution. I
am planning on mail order, so there is no display model for me to look
at.

On the resolution, some monitor say that the max resolution is
1680 by 1050.

The basic model is 1440X900. I was wondering if I got a lap top
with 1680X1050, will there be a blank space on the right side of the
screen?

1680X1050 and 1440X900 are not the same aspect ratios; So, I
have heard that the 1680X1050 resolution will have a blank spot. Is
this true?

Thank you in advance.

Signed: In the Market.

No, normally LCD screens work best at their native resolution, however they
will work at othe lower resolutions.

If you buy a 1440x900 screen you would set windows (or whatever OS you are
using) to use this resolution by right clicking (MS windows) on the screen.
If you buy a 1680x1050 screen you would set windows to use this resolution
(likely the PC would be set as above anyway.)

You should be able to set it in Control Panel to 1600 by 1050 which is the
highest res. normally found on 17 screen laptops. Hope you have 20-20
vision or wear jam-jar bottom glasses!

BTW, I think that 1680 is a typo!

Er ... yes they are:

1680/1050 = 1.6
1440/900 = 1.6

16:10 is the standard aspect ratio for widescreen monitors, and these
are typical resolutions that have that ratio.

However: The answer to your question is that it doesnt matter whether
they have the same aspect ratios or not. The graphics hardware in the
computer will be able to generate an image in various different
resolutions with different aspect ratios, and you will be able to
select the correct aspect resolution for the display you are using.
There will be no blank spots.

This is quite important because if you were to set the graphics card
for (say) 1440x900 and feed the result into a 1680x1050 display panel
you would be trying to display 6 pixels-worth of the image on every 7
physical pixels of the display, which the hardware would achieve by
making one pixel row/column in every 6 twice as wide as the others --
which looks awful. Alternatively, as you say, the hardware might cope
by just using 1440x900 pixels of the display, and leaving a blank
120-pixel border all around. This only happens if you have the graphics
card set to the wrong resolution, though.

On a 17 widescreen notebook display 1440x900 is rather a low
resolution, you should expect to get 1680x1050 or even (if you can
afford it) 1920x1200 on a notebook of that size. 1680x1050 is not
uncommon on 15.4 screens. OTOH 17 is a big display for a notebook,
and the PC will be big and heavy -- much too big and heavy for my
liking.

Cheers,
Daniel.

These ARE the same aspect ratios 1050/900*1440=1680.

Oops! Sorry, Im forgetting these laptops have widescreens! You CAN set the
screen to its highest resolution in Control Panel and this should not leave
any gaps in the display either at the side or at top and bottom. Whether you
will be able to read the detail is another matter!
