I gave my daughter my old thinkpad about six months ago, but now the
machine has stopped working.

Although the battery is fully charged, when you switch it on the four
light to the left of the start button light up momentarily, then all
but the power light goes off - and nothing else happens. No attempt to
load windows, not even the chance to enter the CMOS.

Can anyone suggest how I can get into the machine to attempt to
reinstall windows or even Linux?

Does it work on the mains? If not, the hard disk may be knackered.

Also try it with the battery taken out. Our HP appeared to have given up the
ghost the weekend before last. It would power up for a few seconds but die
totally once it started loading Windows. Same whether the power cable was in
or not.

Remove the battery and it started perfectly.
