Ive got an Aries laptop model 8575 with a strange problem. When booting up
the screen is a horrible green colour which seems to shimmer. Once booted
into windows everything appears normal appart from sometimes a black area
will appear as this horrible green colour. If I open a dos box the
background is this green colour instead of black.
The graphics card is an SiS650 and I have the latest drivers. The Bios is
Insyde SCU.
I think that this might be a Bios problem as it manifest itself before the
Windows drivers are installed. I cant find an updated Bios for this.
Anyone got an idea of how I should tackle this?
Cheers,
Iain

If its in warranty, take it back, otherwise youre possibly out of
luck. Its unlikely to be anything to do with the BIOS.

Does the problem show up on an external monitor? If not, then youve
probably got a problem with the display panel, the (internal) display
cable or backlight. If it does, then its probably a graphics card
problem on the motherboard.

Ive had all sorts of strange display problems as the cable from the
motherboard to the lid fails conductor by conductor.
Your description would lead me to be reasonably confident its the
multiway cable from the motherboard to the display, though:-(

(Sad face, because the manufacturers know its a regular problem, & make
the cable either unavaiable as a spare part, or price it to make it
cheaper for you to buy a new machine)

Hi john,
Its well out of warranty being about 4 or 5 years old. Ive not tried it on
an external monitor but will do when I get a chance. I think I will end up
relegating it to duties in the workshop until it dies.
cheers
Iain

If its what I suspect, they can run for years on an external monitor.
If you want a basic backup store/ file server, plug an external HD into
it, network it, & itll likely chug away until the end of time....
Thats what I did to an IBM pentium 133 thinkpad.
For a faster HD, get a PCMCIA USB2 card or firewire card & plug the
drive into that. Ive got an older Compaq Pentium III 850 MHz laptop
with exactly that setup, & its talking to a 400Gig USB2 HD , as well as
a DVD writer, & itll stream DVD video across the network. It also draws
about a third of the power of the tower unit it replaced.
