I just aquired the laptop and did a clean install of xp and it all works
fine. But the lid is cracked near the hinges and when you moved it it I got
a virtical line of blue on the left side.

Now I have had loose connections on laptop screens in the past so decided to
see if it was loose. I took the screen apart and indeed the line went on and
off. The invertor is fine as the back light works fine.

Now the problem I think may be what I did next. I removed the connector
which carries the picture signal while the laptop was turned on and
obviously the screen went blank but light stayed on. I then reconnected it
but the screen stays blank. Have I killed the screen? I realise I should
have done it when switched off with the battery removed but my inpatience
got to me.

Is there anything I can do to rectify it as all connections seem fine and
the laptops workd fine also on an external display. If its dud where can I
get a screen for it and will it be worth the outlay?

Thanks

Simon.

Hard to say, without access to another laptop you could swap parts over.
I would stop now, and either find another screen to test - or find
someone who can verify the LCD driver circuits on the motherboard are
still functional.

Another thought, perhaps related to the original problem, is that there
is some contamination / damage in the fine pitch ribbon connectors which
may have moved during your unplugging exercises. Have a closer look!

Another thought #2 - your keyboard / BIOS has a keypress procedure for
switching external / internal monitors off and on. Perhaps its now
defaulted to the external screen.

Do you have access to a service manual for this laptop? There is an
outside chance of a fault finding procedure which may tell more.

Depends on age of the beast (and if its the screen). fraid its ebay
or google to find out!

I honestly cannot see any damage

I can switch from external to lcd etc but the screen just has the backlight.

Its not that old, the screen has nov 2004 on it and the laptop is an athlon
mobile 64 3400+ with a radeon 9700 so its fairly well specced but its
weather it is worh spending Ł130 plus on it really.

Just strange how it was working and then after unplugging and re connecting
it stopped displaying.

Thanks

Simon

Hi Simon,

You could email ITDealers, or Kundra Computers (Im afraid you will
have to google both as my favourites havent been transferred over
since my last format). Ive used both in the past for laptop repairs
and parts, and both have been very helpful.

I never thought about IT dealers as have used before and are not far from
me. I have a screen on order at the moment and if that dont sort it it
should sell on again easy enough.
