HP seem to be banging out a good range of high spec laptops at
present. Do they make them themselves and are they good/reliable VFM
machines?

im thinking about getting one to replace my pentium 3 500mhz desktop

HP machines are either made by Compal or Quanta.

Neat little table here of who makes what ;-)

I have no idea what VFM is, but this re-conditioned Pavilion zd7000
laptop has been utterly reliable for the three years Ive been using it
daily. It feels nicely solid, and the parts all fit together as though
they are meant to - not like some laptops, which look as if theyve been
cobbled together to keep down to a price. My only complaint, is that the
markings on the keyboard are starting to wear off.

HP and Compaq are the same company. I have a Compaq Presario 705 and I
would not recommend it at all. But it is old and maybe HP source from
somewhere different to the old Compaq lines.

FWIW, the power connector keeps coming loose and Ive seen a couple of
motherboards where the power to the backlight failed (and yes, the
motherboard failed - the screen and backlight worked fine with another
motherboard).
