Sorry to post here, please ignore if you wish, but couldnt find anywhere to
post.

My kids are currently using an old desktop with a 450 amd processor and
128mb of ram, needless to say it is painfully slow, they only really use for
MSN etc and wondered whether it was worth ugrading the memory ? or should it
just be dumped ?

I should add its using XP as well which probably doesnt help

Its definitely worth upgrading the memory, it will make it go like
shit off shovel. Windows likes having a lot of memory.

But is it really worth spending on an amd 450 ? Als I think the motherboard
limit is only 256mb anyway.

Windows 2000 needs 128MB of RAM to do anything useful.
It will run in half of that, maybe a bit less, but the
amount of disk swapping required to do so will slow the
computer down *exponentially*.

For Windows XP, the equivalent figure is 256MB of RAM.

You have a choice if you want to stick with 128MB.
Either switch back to Windows 2000, or turn off all the
eye-candy in Windows XP so it runs just like Win2K.
Someone else can tell you how to do this.

You should be able to pick up a 128MB SDRAM SODIMM
fairly cheaply second-hand. Furthermore, the extra
memory will increase the resale value of your laptop,
if you decide to sell it on in the future.

Yep, memorys really cheap these days. I still have a Pentium MMX 166
o/c to 233 that I still use for MSDOS stuff.

Sorry, thats what happns when you post this sort of question
to uk.comp.sys.laptops rather than uk.comp.homebuilt.

Ignore my comment above about the SODIMM. SDRAM DIMMs are not
just fairly cheap; they are dirt cheap.

If your motherboard has an Intel 430TX chipset, it can take
up to 256MB of RAM.

Its more likely that you have a motherboard that can run at
100MHz, and youve configured your K6-2 CPU to have a multiplier
of 4.5x. If so, you can go up to 768MB of RAM, with three 256MB
DIMMs. (No socket 7 motherboard supports 512MB SDRAM DIMMs.)

No, I had assumed he had Windows 98 installed, as that does performs a
lot better with some extra memory.

And dont assume I was the OP.
