I had a client turn up on my doorstep first thing this morning (hes just
left) clutching his Satellite 3000-400 which hed been using during a storm.
He claimed the internal modem had stopped working which testing proved to be
correct. Although the Query Modem (Diagnostics, More Info) stuff was
working the modem would not dial out or anything.
So I thought Id fit a PCMCIA modem to get him going short-term. I tried
with three different ones which all appeared to install on COM1. However
Query Modem always came back with a could not open port error and there
was no sign of COM1 in Device Manager.
So, how can I get this laptop to use the COM1 that the modem thinks its
installed on? Or is it possible that the storm damage has something to do
with the failure?

Hi Richard,

Try disabling the internal modem in the Bios, this will free the virtual com
port the internal modem is using! Then try re-installing the PCMCIA modem
again! Not Psion Gold Card Modem by any chance?

Cheers,

Lee.

Thanks Lee,
Id tried something similar but didnt seem to get anywhere. I had a PM
from Raj Kundra which suggested manually adding a COM port - that seems to
be doing a bit better at the moment.
Id tried three different modems, TDK, Platinium(sic) and some other
Lucent-based thing.

If the internal modem is still registering as functional i wonder if
something else is blocking modem activity. A complete format and reinstall
never hurts.
