Hi people, first time laptop buyer in the UK looking to econonomise as
much as possible.

Found these two nice offers:

http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/nbrange.html?NNB-402

Questions:

1) Is Novatech any good? I have been reading quite a few frustrated
posts here in these groups like having to check before hand for the
battery + adaptor to be included in the offer, laser drives not
responding, customer service not being the best there is etc.

2) Could any of you give me (or even guess from past experience) any
detailed specs concerning the motherboard and the chipsets of this
laptop offer (graphics and wireless mostly - other details are on their
website surprisingly enough). I emailed the company for the
aforementioned laptop offer and got this reply:

It is our own brand but the motherboard is a Foxconn. It has a 1yr
warranty unless you take the 2yr care pack which covers us picking it
up parts and labour and returning it to you. We do not offer support as
far as Linux is concerned but there is no reason why it should not
work.

3) Concerning Linux, did any of you out there experienced serious
trouble with a Novatech laptop? Did the wireless work ok ? I know
Ubuntu and Gentoo has a great support for almost everything.

All in all, will I regret buying from Novatech? Is their courier
service alright?

Thanks you guys.

I live near Novatech so have never used the courier service. I have bought
two laptops from them last year and they seem fine. One developed a fault
but it was fixed under warranty within a few days. I plan to buy my next
one from them. Their prices are v. competitive and it is the only place I
know of where you can buy a machine without o/s

Did you try installing Linux? Had any problems with wireless?

my father has, over the last 3 years, purchased 2 laptops from them, both
have functioned without problems so he has not been able to test their
warranty. The laptops are/were manufactured in the middle east as are many
makes.

a close friend purchased one of their TV systems and had difficulty setting
it up. He got absolutely no assistance from them. They advised he call, at
his cost, which turned out to be Ł10, the Dutch manufacturer. He ended up
writing to them and asking then to phone him. Funnily enough they
did............... Novatech were unhelpful.

I was given some software as a present, originally purchased from Novatech.
I did not load it and it remained in its cellophane wrapper. I had the
receipt and contacted them to ask if I could either exchange it or get a
refund, they refused even though I had purchased goods from them for both
myself and my company.............Novatech were unhelpful.

Within the last year I purchased one of their FoxConn mobo/cpu/ram
assemblies to upgrade my desktop. It has functioned without fault.

In the main I/we continue to use them as they are local and stock most
parts/upgrades plus their prices ARE very good.

dont forget that optional 2 years is really only one year.........they
dont tell you the first year is covered under the normal warranty.
