A friend has a Toshiba Satellite 4200 which is not well. The mains adaptor
seems to be working and generating the correct current, the battery seems
to be charging correctly and all the lights suggest good health when the PC
is off, but when it is turned on the DC-in light flashes orange and the PC
does not power up.

This seems to indicate a failed DC-DC power supply board, which I am told
is a fairly common problem with Toshes that fail ... unfortunately I also
hear getting the PC repaired by a Toshiba approved service centre will
probably not be a cost-effective ... a figure of Ł300 has been mentioned.

Can anyone here recommend a good repairer that might be able to do the
repair for less ... or even a source of the necessary part?

Thanks,
Daniel.

Try pulling the primary battery and starting on AC only.

Thanks for the suggestion but I think hes tried that already as part of
the process of proving that neither the mains brick nor the battery were at
fault. It really does seem to be an internal fault and all the signs seem
(to me, at least) to point to the DC-DC board.

Cheers,
Daniel.

Either he has or he hasnt tried removing the primary battery and then
attempting to operate the unit on AC alone.

Guessing that hes tried that already doesnt help to diagnose the problem!

If he attempts to operate on AC alone with the battery removed, does the
laptop exhibit the same blinking charge LED and failure to start??

Thats true ... and Ive now checked with him and can confirm that he has
tried that (so my recollection of our earlier conversation was correct).

It fails to start, yes. Ive asked him to repeat the experiment and confirm
that the symptoms are *exactly* the same.

Cheers,
Daniel.

Oops, I thought Id already responded to that.
He confirms that the symptoms are identical in all cases.

Cheers,
Daniel.
