Hi,

A friend of mine has acquired a Vaio laptop, model PCG-GRX416G. It has 256MB
RAM already, and supports 512MB. We bought another 256MB, but it suffers the
famous dodgy second memory slot.

I fitted it and applied gentle pressure on the DIMM to get it to work. I
used a piece of mains cable insulation to apply constant pressure with the
cover on, and it worked for about a half hour. It now locks up.

My question, will this laptop support a single 512MB module, or does it have
to be 2 x 256MB to get the max?

Ive checked on the Sony website, but it doesnt say.

Im also after the touchpad driver for the same machine. I believe its an
ALPS pad, and I have an XP driver for it. Wont be able to test it for a
week, so was wondering if there was one that is specifically for this model.

TIA,

Pete.

The Crucial memory advisor only lists 256MB 200-pin SODIMM
for the GRX-400 series and says max RAM is 512MB:
http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.asp?model=VAIO+PCG%2DGRX400+Series&tabid=CR
(use this if above wraps):

This tool is pretty reliable, so Id say 2 x 256MB modules is the
best you can do. Another good thing about Crucial is that if
anything they recommend doesnt work, no problem at all in
return/replacement/money back.

Bought a sinlge 512MB module, and it works fine, 512MB reported, and speed
much improved.
