Hi All

According to my Mesh laptop manual, the raid drivers should be installed via
a usb floppy (not supplied).
Would it work with a usb pen drive ?

Also, for some reason they have setup the single 4200rpm 80gb drive as a
stripe.
If I add a 40gb 5400rpm drive and change the raid settings to ide, will I
lose whats on the original and have to re-install ?

TIA

Peter

you need to turn off the RAID in the BIOS not sure how you can stripe to one
disk though. I would have thought RAID you need at least two by definition
alone ie RAID = Random Array Inline Disks. So you shouldnt in theory lose
your DATA as there is no raid set up BUT back it up 1st before you do
anything. Also if you use the other drive in a RAID thenyou will only get 2
X 40 gB in a RAID 1 or 80GB as a RAID 0 as it will only use two of the
smallest amount of storage if that makes sense

Yes, thats why I want to turn off the array and use it as an ide
controller.
I think its very strange striping one disk.
At boot up it comes up as 1 +0 (which as we all know is mirror and stripe).

Oh well, assuming I can find a 1 2.5 ide cable, we shall see.

hang on, hang on. if this laptop can do RAID, its likely that even
when you only have a single disk that its connected to the same RAID
controller. SATA drives in desktop boards with onboard SATA/RAID do
this, for example. Youre connected to the RAID controller, but youre
just not using the RAID functionality.
Single disks on RAID controllers often present themselves as RAID 1+0 -
it doesnt mean its set as actually running in RAID, its just how
its reporting. If it benchmarks OK, you shouldnt change it.
A 2.5 IDE cable wont help as you wont have anywhere in the laptop to
connect it...

Hi ric

I know its on the raid controller, Im just going to switch the controller
to ide mode.
I run three hard disks in my desktop the same way.
I DO actually have a connection for another hard disk cable as well as
another teeny removable hard disk caddy :-)

In case you havent seen one of these, its a Mesh Ultima Plus 17

Basically, a big Clevo with a P4 Prescott 3.4gz, 1 gb of ddr ram, 17 tft,
and as well as bays for the dvdrw, subwoofer, card reader, PC card etc, has
a separate bay for two hard disks side by side with vertical cable
connections for both. (though the cable is really two connectors separated
by an inch of film-like ribbon cable).

Apparently two should have been supplied with the laptop, so Mesh are going
to send me one out.
