Im looking to buy a laptop.

Can anyone suggest which of PC Worlds present range is to be
recommended? It will be used for Office apps, email, web,
storing/manipulating photographs, burning CD/DVDs and some CAD. Weight
isnt too much of an issue, neither is battery life.

Oh, and it *has* to be from PC World.

Were you looking for x86 or a Mac, or with an open mind?

Have a look out for Hewlett Packard (not to be confused with Packard
Bell). Every now and then, PCW do some cracking offers on HP products,
but their regular prices are not great.

If youre good at haggling, then let the sales droid talk you into the
top extended warranty and insurance in exchange for a big discount on
the price of the unit. Thats where they make the bulk of their money
so they may even subsidise the cost of the laptop if you go for the
maximum warranty and insurance. Then, one day after purchasing the
unit, cancel the insurance and extended warranty - theres something
like a 14 day cooling off period.

My brother (who, as a student some years ago worked part time at PCW)
taught me this tricj. He recently purchased (iirc) a Toshiba laptop
and a Sony laptop using this method and ended up paying around Ł150
less in total than the cheapest online retailers.

HTH (at least more than Guys answer ;)

I bought a Compaq V4110E for a decent price of Ł649 a couple of weeks ago
and Im pretty happy with it. 40gb HD, 512 RAM, 128 graphics, dual layer
DVD/RW, 1.4 Celeron M, 15.4 widescreen, bluetooth. A half decent spec with
the compromise being the slower CPU.

Youll have all manner of smart arses telling you that you are mad and
nothing good comes out of pc world, which is pretty much close to the truth
as most of the staff know nothing, but you obviously have your reasons.
Mine was I had a day in London before returning to South Africa, and
compared to prices here, its a bloody good deal. I dont see it on their
web site anymore so maybe its gone. But anyway, buy a laptop mag and look
for the group tests commendations if you want to do a bit of research into
something else.

Magic word which indicates an excellent laptop, in general Centrino (a
pentium M based laptop) a fantastic chipset, very powerful, and very good in
terms of battery usage.
You can get a cheaper version of what is essentially the centrino, called a
Celeron M, it *must* say M...

Dont touch a Pentium 4 or a none M based Celeron laptop, it will burn your
knees off and suck battery power.

It sounds like its an insurance claim that has been paid out in vouchers.
I know PC world isnt ideal but there are certainly less bad choices from
their range
