Aldi are offering this Medion laptop for 899.99 from 27 October 2005, looks
like a good deal, does anyone have any experience of this machine?

I dont own one, but did look carefully at the specs last year. Overpriced
was the decision, unless the free warranty is taken into account, which was
worth about Ł200. And they are big. They tend to run a bit hot AIUI but
most laptops are like this these days.

Review of Medion with a Turion 64 processor (ML-30):

I finally got an HP with a 12 screen which only weighs 1.5 Kgm and is more
luggable.

From Morgan computers as it happens. Its not meant to be a desktop
replacement as theres no CD reader but its very portable, doesnt
dislocate your shoulder, and has a nice keyboard.
Its worth browsing through What Laptop http://www.whatlaptop.co.uk/

Never heard of the hip-e.

Bought one last time around for Ł999.
Returned it for a full refund because the WIFI was faulty.

They seem way overpriced to me, although the spec. is reasonable. All the
supermarkets seem to be getting in on the act these days. I bought a super
digital camera, 6.36 million-pixels, and great spec., performance and
software, from Somerfields of all places, 89 quid!

Yes. Bought one back in May.

Took the first one back after 2 hours. DVD drive fault. Took the second
back after 3 days. It ran so hot that I think it is a misnomer to call it
a laptop. It was painful after only a few minutes of using it on my lap -
and no I wasnt blocking any air vents. I also found the WiFi to be
temperamental in terms of connection speed dropping and loss of connection.
However this was almost certainly due to the Intel WiFi driver that was out
at the time. There are newer driver versions available now that dont
exhibit the same problems.

I also found the laptop somewhat slow given that it uses one of the new
breed of Sonoma Intel chips and DDR2 RAM. Additionally the PCMCIA
DTT/Analogue TV card that was bundled last time round was unusable. I ended
up with an Acer Travelmate 8104 WLMi which is similarly specified but cost a
little bit more. However it runs much cooler despite using the slightly
faster Pentium M 760 CPU (2.0 GHz) and has good battery life for those rare
times I run it where theres no mains supply.

The software bundle initially looks quite attactive, but I never use MS
Works so the inclusion of this is no good to me, Im not really a gamer, and
the only software that I personally would have found useful is the inclusion
of Nero and the DVD playback software. I would have liked the inclusion of
the DVB TV/FM card, but as I say, it was less than useless even with a good
aerial connection to the outside chimney mounted mast. So, not all is as
it first seems.

Personally, 6 months on I think this Aldi laptop is now overpriced, of
faulty design (heat problems as experienced on both laptops I had from
Aldi), and should you experience problems that require a replacement or
refund after the first 30 days you will have to wait for Aldi to send it
back to Medion which obviously will take several days at the very least
(this is company policy according to my local Aldi store).

All things considered, I dont think you can go too far wrong by looking at
the offerings of the major players: IBM/Lenovo, Sony, Toshiba, HP, Acer
etc... for reliability and service even though you might pay a little more

Nick
