Okay...

Im new to laptops..
About a year ago I got, 2nd hand, an HP Pavilion N5420L with an
850Mhz Celeron

It came with Win ME installed. I messed with it for a few weeks, then
used it on and off during the next few months for some programming
classes I was taking. Recently I Installed win XP on it..
I noticed it was getting pretty hot before that, but when I had it
running for a long time with hard drive activity installing and
setting up XP, it got REAL hot...

I looked at the fan through the slots in the back and it was not
spinning. Apparently the fan died on me.

Found an exploded view of the laptop, and noted I would have to take
out almost everything to get to the fan,,, sooooo.. I opted to let a
pro do it... Just got it back today from Radio Shack (They sent to
authorized sevice center) and turned it on at the store to make sure
it worked and when I turned it on, the fan spun up.. Ok I thought.
All fixed.

Get it home,. and the fan is not moving.. Only spins up for a few
seconds when I power the laptop up.

From what Im reading in the newsgroups it seems this may be normal?
Does not spin unless it hits some unknown (to me) temp?

Does anyone know how the fan on this specific laptops fan is supposed
to work?

I dont wanna take it back and be out my machine for another 3 weeks,
but dont wanna have paid $150+ and end up with a still
non-functioning fan in my machine.

Thoughts??

Tony!

Is there an operating problem here or are you just concerned with the
fan not spinning when you think it should? In overheat mode the laptop
should at least freeze or completely power off. Does this happen? If
not, then it is not clear that there is a fan problem at all. Some
laptops do get hot to the touch. Have you checked BIOS setup for power
management functions that might have an effect on the fan? Is there a
temperature indicated in BIOS Setup?

None that I can see so far.. Plan on taking it to work with me
tomorrow and stress testing it. On my desktop the fans spin all the
time and if the CPU fan ever stopped it wouldnt be good for my
system at all !

Not used to the fan not spinning all the time, but from reading posts
and talking with friends, Im seeing that this could be normal unless
I start getting freezing or unexpected reboots.

Nothing in bios for the fan, and no temp sensors in the case. :(

If the fan does not activate when called by the CPU, the CPU will
overheat quickly and the thermal protection circuit will shut down the
laptop without warning.
