Anyone encountred a laptop available in the UK that features both of the
above?

I believe some Dells can take a 2nd HD - but with RAID 0?

I want a machine that can really tackle VMWare/VirtualPC away from home.

Cheers

You have 3 problems:
o Resolution -- 1920x1200 is very high
---- laptop = thin + light + LVDS panel = current limit around 1600x1200
o RAID -- dual RAID in 2.5 is possible on some laptops
---- more HD = more battery = more weight & space
o Economics -- low volume means disproportionate price

> I want a machine that can really tackle VMWare/VirtualPC away from home.

Solaris laptops suggested run into a few problems for you.
o Pro -- Dual-HD for RAID, 1-2 CPU for power, lots of RAM, PCI slot
o Con -- 2-CPU has no battery + 20.5lbs + 1280x1024 resolution + 3.9 thick
(10cm)

Easy -- Luggable PC:
o Con -- no battery + 15/20 do 1600x1200 + 25-50lb weight
o Pro -- desktop based so fully upgradeable, repairable, economic
o Pro -- multiple full 3.5 10k-rpm HDs, full size optical, several PCI cards
etc

Difficult -- DIY Luggable PC:
o Con -- difficulty in getting thin + light + LVDS panel capable of resolution
o Con -- also need a TTL to LVDS adapter for that panel to PC
o Pro -- probably cheaper than the OffTheShelf luggable at Ł4-7k

Compromise -- Laptop & External HD:
o Laptop with UXGA -- 1600x1200 is certainly possible
o WD Raptor 10k 3.5 -- easy to do twin drives in RAID array

o Luggables have vast initial-cost, tiny upgrade cost (dont break the TFT)
o Laptops have high initial cost, high upgrade cost (unitary replacement)

Tx Dot, but I never actually mentioned need for a Solaris server. Windows

Dell & Sony do a bunch of 1920x1200 laptops. So far Ive found a few
wieghty 1600x1200 models out there with RAID0 as well - some of the
re-badged Clevo models - e.g. Savrow - however Im simply greedy - I want it
all - mega screen and RAID0 for max performance.

I doubt an external HD via USB would compete with in-built RAID 0.

Ive even read mention of QXGA panels - 2048 x 1400 or somesuch - havent
seen a model with this yet...

Cheers

I meant to post this last night...
o http://www.nextcomputing.com/NextBook.pdf
o Windows OR Solaris
o Single P4 @ 3-3.8Ghz
o 15.4 @ 1920x1200 or 17 @ 1680x1050
o Dual HD + RAID-0 or RAID-1
o 9-11lbs
o L-Ion Battery

Price starts @ 2k$ + 1k$ for 15.4 1920x1200 TFT.

Re external HD, no youd have to use Firewire.

If you want the resolution for screen real-estate, then a bigger panel
helps - 1920x1200 on 15.4 is a bit tight. Depends on your eyesight :-)

Must be in some sort of race. Could it be the Human Race?
If his eyesight is good enough now, it wont be by the time he has used this
beast for a few hours!

I guess it depends on the proposed usage.

Two ways to use 1920x1200 @ 15.4:
o Font definition -- increase font size in apps & windows
o Real estate -- two 1024-pixel 15 screens squashed into 15.4

Considering how niche they are, the prices really arent bad.

Luggables have a benefit in using desktop components, so it
is easy to change CPU, board, PSU, 3.5-HD, SCSI, h/w RAID,
lots of PCI slots. The downside is no battery & 2-3x the weight.
That weight is something not to underestimate re 23-35lbs.

The nicest hybrid is the www.dolch.com FlexPAC - best of both
worlds, although somewhat light on CPU/HD & heavy on price.
