I wonder if anyone can help me? Ive searched groups.google.com for older
posts, and whilst some might be helpful none of them deal with my specific
issue.

I have a Toshiba Satellite 1800-700. Recently the backlight has started
cutting out, sometimes after flickering a little.

Depressing and releasing the screen sensor harness nib (term culled from
another post, basically the switch that shuts off the backlight when the lid
is closed) causes the backlight to come back on, but often only briefly.
Physical contact with the case seems to expedite the next failure.

OK, so far sounds like a dodgy lamp / ballast / inverter, but heres the
rub... The behaviour changes according to the angle of the screen, and
according to power mode, usage etc., as follows:

1. Push screen back until almost flat on desk - frequency of problem reduces
2. Use laptop on batteries on knee when lying on sofa - almost no problems
at all
3. Hot weather - frequency of problem increases
4. Change APM mode to long life (lower CPU speed, etc.) - frequency of
problem reduces
5. In fact, in general, getting out of my office seems to help no end!

Basically Im stumped. I dont want to fork out for new components if they
are the wrong ones. I have a suspicion that heat is a factor here (also had
problems with the fan failing to start at boot recently, resulting in an
on-screen message about a failure in the cooling system) - these babies run
very hot indeed - but without knowing where all the components are and where
the heat paths are I cant comment any further - can anyone help??

Many thanks

Silas

(apologies for cross-posting, but figure both groups are legitimate places
to post for a London-based boy like me)

Theres a coincidence. I purchased an 1800-100 a few weeks back but when I
went to collect it was exhibiting exactly the same problems. The sensor
switch was restoring it intermittently but it wouldnt stay on. The vendors
have sent it off for repair so Ill let you know if they succeed and how (if
youll do the same for me).

Hmm, figured it might be a model-specific problem. Yes, will happily
reciprocate on the repair stories!

Best wishes

Silas

The pins on the inverter have become oxidised! You need to add some
anti-oxidant to the FL Inverter pins. Applying Threebond Adhesive to the LCD
harness helps the problem as well. I only noticed the problem before on
Tecra 8100s and Satpro 4600s, but appears to be evident on the Sat 1800
range as well, of recent!

Cheers,

Lee.

Youll probably find they will replace the FL Inverter or screen, but this
will not really help the issue as it will re-appear!

Lee.

I have posted this message a couple of days ago. Could it be the same
problem?
Thx

Floris

--- snip snip ---
Hi,

Got a Toshiba Pro 6100 for about 1.5 year. Since a couple of months the tft
display turns off when the laptop is switched on four a couple of hours. The
TV-Out working ok. It seems to be a heat problem. Turning off the laptop for
a couple of hours works. Toshiba advised to install the latest BIOS which
didnt help.

Has any Pro 6100 owner had the similar problems? Can it be fixed easily by
Toshiba?

I know this Toshiba model is a total disaster. I want to know if I must
invest time in this laptop or just throw it out of the window. Thanks in
advance.

Hi Mate,

No probably not! If you have any issues take it to a Tosh Authorised repair
centre as this laptop may need some major work done to it as follows:

Metal Plate from LCD cover needs removing, and glass tape applied instead!
Systemboard and powerboard need replacing making sure glass tape is used to
cover up a certain resitor on the underneath of the systemboard, which if
not done can cause the laptop to cut out when docked! Also a VGA Support
harness needs fitting + Latest bios + EC/KBC needs to be applied!

Have you seen any sign of a Bad RTC Battery error message on boot up at all?
If not then it may just be that the FL Inverter is over heating, and will
need to be replaced, could just be as simple as the Inverter pins have
become oxised!

Let me know where you are and Ill sort some repair centre numbers out.

Cheers,

Lee.
