Hi,

I am looking to buy a new 60GB hard disk for my 600mhz laptop.

I am thinking of either the:

Hitachi TravelStar 7K60
8MB Cache
7200rpm

OR the:

Toshiba MK-4019GAX.
16mb cache
5400rpm

Basically my question is whether the increased cache of the Toshiba
will compensate for its reduced speed?

Will performance be similar enough to warrent buying the Toshiba?

There is no problem with size as 60GB will suit all my needs and will
be the last upgrade on this machine.

Any thoughts welcomed.

regards

Pete

rpm affects seek time, nothing else.

HD cache is much like CPU cache, the more the better, 16 mb cache is very
good as the vast majority of disk read / writes will be smaller than that.

Hitachi is the new name for IBM hard disks, and you couldnt pay me to use
either them or fujitsus, because both companies were complete and utter
shits that sold loads of drives that they knew were crap and then did their
level best to avoid treating their customers properly.

I suggest you have a read of

HTh etc

The problems were with Deskstar (Deathstar) HDs and not the Travelstar
laptop HDs.

There isnt enough bandwidth here to discuss whether or not IBM treated
their customers well or not by replacing the affected HDs. But the fact
remains that retail IBM/Hitachi laptop HDs come with 3 year warranties and,
on the few occasions Ive had to make use of warranty services, there were
no problems getting replacement drives.

For the OP, the speed of the 7K60 trumps the cache of the Toshiba.

and the power consumption, heat rejection, and MTBF of the tosh trumps the
ibm / hitachi

Toshiba MK6026GAX (HDD2194) 60GB HDD:

Start: 5.0watts (max)
Seeking: 2.9watts (typ)
Reading/Writing: 2.5watts (typ)
Idle: 1.05watts (typ)
Standby: 0.25watts (typ)
Sleep: 0.1watts (typ)

Hitachi 7K60:

Start: (max. peak)5.5 W
Seeking: (average)2.6 W
Reading/Writing: (average)2.5 W
Idle: (average)1.3 W
Standby: (average)0.25 W
Sleep: 0.1 W

WTH does heat rejection mean? MTBF (a ridiculous and artificial figure) is
the same for both drives at 300K hours as is the Product Life of 5 years or
20K power on hours.

The Hitachi is a better HD!

Those IBM hard disks had one nifty feature. The jumper links had a nice
long push/pull tab on them. They could be removed and inserted without
the need for snipe-nosed pliers or tweezers. Whenever I see an IBM hard
disk being slung, I always nick the jumper links.

Ill bet you large amounts of money you could run the hitachi for a
month, then every day for a week you give me your laptop in a locked
room for one hour, one of those days I ghost the hitachi over to the
tosh and you never know the difference from simply using the computer.

Thats kind of answered my question perfectly.

The only thing that concerns me now is the lack of real world testing
as its a fairly new disk and some question over the vibrations some
have reported the drive causes..

Still the 7K60 is looking the best bet speed wise at the moment.

Thanks guys.
