Model: IBM Thinkpad 600X Type 2645-4EG

Symptom: Will not POST/Boot

When the machine is turned on the fan starts, the battery led is green
and the other indicator LEDs light for 2 seconds after which the hard
disk in use and power on indicators remain on and the fan goes to
idle and thats it - nothing else, no sound of hard drive activity and
nothing on the screen.

I have tried with various components removed e.g.. CDROM drive, HDD,
extra memory, modem card etc.. to try to narrow down the problem but no
luck. I have also replaced the CMOS battery and used the reset button.

The main battery is good, no passwords are set and no keys are stuck
down (as far as I can see).

There are NO beep codes.

It looks like a mainboard/CPU failure to me.

Anyone got any ideas??

Mine was broken also until I removed one of the two RAM modules. One of
the slots had died for some reason. Neither RAM module would work in it.
So Im using the 128M module in the good slot and all is AOK.

I tried all possible combinations until I found that if you left a
module out of one slot, the machine worked. Beats me why the slot died.
It might be even something as mundane as an intermittent solder joint,
but Im not playing with it.

IBM maintain manuals/drivers etc for these models - if you didnt already
know.

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?doctypeind=9&template=%2Fproductselection%2Flandingpages%2FdownloadsDriversLandingPage.vm

is a good start point - watch the word wrap.

My sons 600X exhibited the same symptoms are being dunked in cornflakes and
milk (dont ask). I replaced the mainboard having found a supplier on eBay.
It sounds like a mainboard failure.
