I have just purchased a G-732 laptop and am very happy with it.... except
that I am short a line-in for ripping from tapes and LPs. There is a
mic-in and Im wondering if this could be a dual purpose. If so, is it
software switched. Ive never come across this before so any advice at all
will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian

Mic in and line in are not the same. The signal levels are miles apart
unless your hardware has some sort of built-in ALC to adjust for it.

I had the same problem when I found out there was no line level inputs, so I
did a bit of searching and ended up buying a Creative Soundblaster MP3+ box
thing, about the size of a cassette, plugs into a USB port and has phono
line in/out sockets (and some digital ones I dont use) on it.

There is also one but I cant remember which company makes it, which has a
pre-amp for turntables in it, which would be pretty useful.

I got one in a software package called Steinberg Clean Plus. Its badged
Pinnacle Systems, but no other identification that I can see.

FWIW I also have used the MP3+ thing, which is much more user friendly
if you dont need the phono equalisation.

One of the laptops here does have a mic socket which is switched to line
in when you select that on the mixer. It isnt just an attenuator, as
its mono for mic and stereo for line and works reasonably well.

Another vote for the Creative MP3+. I use one on both my laptop and desktop
for the very purpose the OP needs something for (amongst other things, at
all of which it performs well.) About thirty quid from online retailers or
forty from yer local Pesky (ahem, PC) World (last time I looked).

Many thanks to all. I now have some good information to work with. It pays
to ask the experienced since the people in the local computer store didnt
have a clue. Also, a fellow in the local Camera shop mentioned that he had
the same problem and the best solution for him was to use a USB system that
is used by people recording from electric organs etc.
Thanks again,
Brian
