www.aldi.co.uk , on special offers

999GBP for dvd burner laptop, 80gig HD, ATi mobile Radeon 9700, LAN etc.
Seems good value, but Ive never heard of Gericom, and the model number is
not specified so I cant explore further.
Anybody know what they are like for reliability?

Theres been a lot of postings to this NG on the subject of Gericom, or
rather their after-sales service, or should I say lack of after-sales
sevice. Now, you wouldnt need after-sales service if the machines were any
good, would you?

Remove nospam from return address.

On the website they dont specify the Gericom notebook model. This is
strange.

Gericom is best selling notebook brand in Germany (ahead of Compaq, IBM,
Toshiba, Sony, Dell, ... according to a www.benchmark.co.yu), probably due
their low prices. I dont know about support quality.

You might want to go to www.gericom.com and order directly. Also, checkout
their Outlet section for a good deal on refurbished notebook.

I think Gericom like Advent are built by Medion. Many (like myself) have had
real problems with Medion support (or lack of it). The machines are fine, I
dont really know if they are any less reliable that others.

I suspect my previous machine failed due to overheating as I got it as a
desktop replacement. My new machine (which is a 3.2 gig P4) seems to have
better built in cooling. I also use a laptop cooler with it and I dont use
it as much as the previous machine. I dont think thats the fault of
Medion, just laptop manufacturers cramming too much into a small frame.

I actually went out and got an old P120 for Ł65 for what I want to use a
laptop for most of the time (Satellite tracking software, email etc) and it
works really well.

If you do go for one my advice is that if it goes wrong DONT use the Medion
support centre line, just demand a replacement form the company who sold it
to you. Get onto your trading standards department if you need to. I didnt
have a laptop for over 3 months due to the wankers at Medion.

..............................................................................................................................................

They are NOT built by Medion. Medion and Gericom like virtually all laptop
brands are made by either, Uniwill, ECS, Asus, or Clevo. They are all based
in the far east, and simply supply chassis for customisation by the main
manufacturers.

The ODM (original design manufacturer) supply the basic chassis, with
motherboard, sometimes CPU, GPU,and ports fitted. The OEM (original
equipment manufacturer) then add components, like HDD, MEMORY, and software,
add their badge/sticker and ship to the customer/shop.

I have a laptop based on the Uniwill N251C1 chassis, which is also used by
Gericom in their blockbuster range, however I could not comment on the
Gericom machine as its quite different from the machine I have. The Gericom
machine has an Intel P4 for a start, whereas my machine is an Athlon XPm.

Whatlaptop forums is a great place to ask questions about Gericom. Some
people on there have got them, and seem pleased with them.

But its the crap support that is the problem, NOT the machines and that has
SFA to do with the far east.
