If your laptop and PC dont have network adapters in them youll need
one for each PC, a PCI one for the desktop and a PCMCIA one for the
laptop. Youll need a crossover CAT5 patch lead which are available
from PC World for around Ł8.

I bought a wireless lan card for lappy for Ł25. special offer. ebay do
wireless usb adapters for Ł26 + vat and delivery. That will work on pc or
laptop. i just ordered one for pc. Hard wire ethernet is cheaper still but
the cable works out at Ł1 a meter ok if the machines are next to each other
but wireless becomes more convenient.

Thanks.
Can I use that to control a printer too? Or would I then need some sort of
hub for that?

DEpends on what you mean. You can print on the printer connected to the
other computer or you can buy a print server that plugs into the
printer and allows it to be used on the network as a standalone. Im
not aware of any wireless print servers although that doesnt mean
there are any BUT you have to be aware that if you want more than a
couple of devices on a wireless LAN youll need a Wireless Access
Point.
