Anyone have an AJP, Rock, or HiGrade, or similar, that actually like their
machine and hav`nt had any problems with it?

i`m looking along the lines of one of these machines, as i think you get
more for your money, i`d like to hear if anyone is satisfied with their
purchase, i`m not interested in any complaints anyone might have. Toshiba,
Dell, and others are too expensive in regards to what you get for your
money.... ie: smaller hard drives, 256 RAM.

I basically want my machine for web-design, digital photography, and the odd
games playing like Commandos, NWN, Warcraft 3, etc, won`t be playing Half
Life, and Far Cry on it, as i can use my desktop beast for this.

any reccommendations welcome.

thanks for your help,

Sparky.

I hated my AJP, regretted it deeply, to be fair it was years ago a Celeron 466 was mid-range> years ago so perhaps they have
improved but poor build quality, os badly installed when purchased, in its
lifetime developed the following faults; dead floppy, unreliable cd-rom,
dead tft pixels, two dead batteries neither of which ever held much charge
and finally PSU connector broke off motherboard, nobody could find a
replacement, 1500 ukp of laptop was 80 ukp of scrap on ebay within about 4
years!

yes but what price reliabilty, effective support, worthwhile warranties?
even limited resale values, good spec PII based Dell laptop *still* worth
couple of hundred pounds!

buy the ram upgrade yourself (kingston, crucial) you will save over what
vendors demand, most likely

any modern spec should support your needs, my advice go intel over amd, ram
over processor speed

good luck :)

I have had the misfortune to have been brought a couple of rock laptops
the 17 screen ones. because they no longer functioned both turned out
to be driver problems one with the screen driver and the other the sound
driver, the rock direct website has a lot of missing links to drivers
etc.. I had to search around on the sound board manufacturers site for
the sound driver.
If you are sure you wont need any support from Rock Direct then their
computers seem to offer good spec for the price.

Ask yourself the most important thing you need from a laptop (if you have a
desktop beast)?

If you are going to spending a lot of time using it with apps then a good
keyboard and a good screen are the most important imo(obviously along with a
decent spec) - I would forsake extra power for a good screen and keyboard
being a coder and use my desktop for future upgrading/power apps/games...
hence Sony Vaio. ;)

Of course some people have nightmare storys about sony service, paying more
for seemingly the same spec. The amount I read about unbranded/cheaper
laptops having rubbish/faulty keyboards and screens that look faded or
whatever caused me a nightmare when choosing a laptop.

Obviously an IBM, Tosh etc would offer these benifits but Im sure the
screen is best on a Sony.

Ive got a Hi grade M6500 had it 2 years bought as a desktop replacement for
work.
Battery died recently but thats no different than other machines.
Used all day it slows down sometimes for a bit when it gets hot. Other than
that its OK
Its really a Mitac 8575.

Running W2K + Linux
