I have the following: Toshiba Satellite CDT, 233 mhz, 64meg ram and only a
3.8 gig hard drive. I would like to install the largest hard drive
possible - but someone has mentioned that the Bios may limit my ability to
do this?

So - wondered if anyone knew anything about this procedure. I.e:

1 Largest size I could fit.
2 Would this be a particular type of drive - or would any laptop drive work
ok.
3 Would it be something I could easily fit myself? and
4 Suggestions of a good web site to buy from?

There is probably a bios limit could be 12Gb or 28Gb or 32Gb if you are
using win 98 it will probably only recognize 32Gb. You can get a bigger
drive say a 40Gb and FDisk it into 2 x 20Gb hard drives that will be C:
& D: on your system.
Any laptop drive will physically fit your computer.
Toshiba usually make it easy to change the hard drives.
On more modern computers there is only 1 screw to remove to get the
drive + frame (caddy) out of the computer, usually 4 screws on the frame
(caddy) to remove it and screw the new drive into the frame. If you have
installed a hard drive in a desktop you should not have too much
difficulty.
Have you got the original install CDs? because you are going to have to
install the operating system on the new hard drive..
If you want all the toshiba functions such as startup password &
hibernation to function you need the original CD or you need the exact
model number to download the drivers from the internet.
www.Dabs.com or www.ebuyer.com . Cheap but wont speak to you if you
have problems.

Martin

thanks for this info.

Sorry - two more questions.

Before I buy a larger hard drive - is there anyway of telling what size the
bios will support. I.e can you enter the bios setting and tell from that?

And - when I install it - rather than have to get hold of all the toshiba
drivers etc. - is there software - the name Ghost rings a bell? - that
you can use to copy everything over to the new disk, and make life a lot
easier for yourself?

The only version of Ghost I have used writes an exact copy of the disc
back.. If you start with a 3.2G drive you get a 3.2G drive when you have
ghosted your image to a new computer/disc.
There is software to copy your existing drive to another disc but you
have to be able to access both discs at the same time...
I think Casper XP is the most user friendly (as in casper the ghost).
As for the bios limitations.. I dont know how to check other than
installing the drive. You will not lose the space no matter what size
drive you buy, it will just mean you will have to Fdisk 2 or 3 or more
volumes.

Startup password is a function of the BIOS and hibernation is a function of
the OS - all the other Toshiba utilities certainly should be on their
website - they certainly are for my Tecra. Where are you looking, and for
what?
