On my new laptop (Xp Pro) I have 4 stages of powering down :-

-Turn off monitor
-Turn off hard disk
-System Standby
-System Hibernate

Suppose I have a program running which is downloading to my hard disk. Which
of the above stages would prevent the download? (Im guessing just the last
two). Does a running program effectively prevent a machine from going into
standby or hibernation?

The last three
