I presume you are not upgrading the HDD with a Tosh drive.
If you were, it would be supported by Tosh.

Tosh will not support aftermarket HDD upgrades by supplying XP discs.

You buy a Ford car and want to put a bigger Vauxhall engine in it, would you
go to Ford to supply the parts required FOC to do this?

Cheers

What a remarkably ill thought and ignorant reply.

Doesnt matter a whit WHOSE HD hes upgrading with. He paid for the OS
when he purchased the laptop (thats what the license sticker on the bottom
of the unit is all about!) and at the least Toshiba should provide him
with a recovery CD that will work with any HD.

To the OP, the restore CD you have will work with any HD. As to getting a
proper XP CD, its not going to happen, but blame M$ for that, not
Toshiba.

Regards,

James

Thats not necessarily true. A guy round here was trying to repair a Sony
laptop with a dead HDD. All fixed up with a new drive before he found that
the restore CD was locked to the HDD number. Sony refused point-blank to
help.

Not surprising to hear that about Sony, but even they can be made to come
through with recoery CDs after a bit of persuasion.

The folks in the UK have a LOT more clout to bring to bear on Sony WRT
customer rights and support than we do on this side of the pond.

Ive read somewhere about a hack that will allow a user to overcome the
Sony HD lock.

Wheres Euan when we need him? Hed know about this matter.

Regards,

James

Thanks for your reply James. Browsing through the restore disk I noticed
there is a ghost file so I presume that the hidden partition on these
machines contain some sort of ghost instructions. With a new non Toshiba
hardrive I doubt if the restore disk would work, as there would be no
setup files for it to write the ghost partition.
As for the ford and vauxhall stuff, I have as you say, paid for Microsoft
xp home, not Toshiba xp home.
